西红柿

Concept, Development, Identity

Designed and built as a personal study tool and now open to everyone, xihongshi (西红柿, "tomato") is a web app for learning Mandarin that works on top of the learner's own Anki. It turns new words into finished flashcards and writes short stories from the words you already know.

xihongshi began as a tool for one learner and grew into a hosted app at xihongshi.app. It is built around Anki, the spaced-repetition flashcard program that many language learners already use. xihongshi doesn't ask learners to move into a new platform with its own account. It connects straight from the browser to the Anki on their own computer, so their collection stays theirs.

When you add a word, xihongshi fills in the pinyin, meanings, example sentences and audio, and files it as a ready-to-study card. The Stories section writes short graded texts using only vocabulary already in your deck. You can read them with pinyin under every character, listen to them, and show a translation when you need it. Highlights collects the passages worth revisiting. Habits turns your Anki history into streaks, hours studied and the number of characters learned.

Translations are available in English, Deutsch, Español, Italiano, Français and Português. A free HSK 1 starter deck gives new learners something to start with on day one. The app is designed around privacy. There's no sign-up, AI keys stay in the browser,s through xihongshi's servers. Visitors who haven't connected Anki yet can explore the whole app with sample data first.
